It’s hard to remember a time when everything you mused, liked and—let’s face it—ate, wasn’t documented on social media. And the effects have certainly been felt where our wardrobes are concerned. For many, posing for an outfit photograph has become part of their daily routines. Of course, some have carved impressive careers from doing so, but at what cost? As it turns out, a financial one.
Our obsession with showcasing our clothes has developed into a culture of excess, where we’d rather buy new than be seen in the same dress for a second or third time. Don’t take our word for it—just look at the facts. Carrying out a study in 18,000 households across 20 countries, Movinga asked participants to estimate the percentage of unworn clothes they have in their wardrobes. On average, those in the UK thought it to be 34%. The reality? A whopping 73% of their clothes went unworn.
However, there are those who have long championed rewearing pieces they love. Of course, this isn’t a groundbreaking idea, but it’s refreshing to see nonetheless. And one of the women who’s restyling ways never fail to impress is The Frugality’s Alex Stedman. “When shopping, I not only think, ‘Do I love it? ‘Will it look nice on the ‘gram?'” Alex confides, “But also, I try to think of at least four things it’ll work with within my existing wardrobe. I don’t buy it unless I can think of a few places I can wear it to and a few different ways I can style it.”
“Funnily enough, this doesn’t mean my wardrobe is full of grey and black basics. My most ‘useful’ and reused pieces are often the most flamboyant items that can be mixed with the grey knitwear. I have a pink sequinned skirt that felt like a frivolous buy at the time, but I wore it last summer with trainers and a tee, in autumn with a hoodie and flats and now with heels and a chunky knit. Equally, my leopard coat from two years ago still makes my plain jeans and jumper look feel much more fashion and pulled together,” says Stedman.
It appears other influencers share her sentiment that their pieces should be given the attention they deserve with plentiful outings. Keep scrolling to see how to repeat outfits with flair…
